The Bean Pedia: Vietnamese Drip Coffee

History of Vietnamese Drip Coffee

Viet Nam is one of the coffee producing countries in Southeast Asia. Viet Nam also exports coffee to the world because the coffee produced by the country is famous for good quality and can be enjoyed by coffee lovers in the world.

The origins of coffee entering Viet Nam can not be separated from the role of a French priest who brought the tree seedlings of Arabica coffee in 1857. Shortly after the arrival of the priest, Viet Nam began planting coffee trees in the highland area (center highlands) in Buon Ma Tuot area which until now is the best coffee-producing region in the whole of Viet Nam.

Vietnamese Coffee itself in Viet Nam is "cà phê sữa nóng" which means brown dark coffee with milk. While the Vietnamese Dripper used to make coffee is called "cà phê phin". Some sources also say that this metal dripper was introduced by a Frenchman who came to Viet Nam.

The presence of Vietnamese Drip Coffee using sweetened condensed milk has a history as well. In its time, Viet Nam found it difficult to find fresh milk for consumption and to replace cream and milk as a blend of coffee, the people of the day used sweetened condensed milk. Culture to drink coffee with a mixture of sweetened condensed milk is done from generation to generation.
